Having a Library

If you are a coin and/or currency collector, then you need to have or start a library of books about your interest(s). How many books are in my library? Over 24 and I'm still adding to it. How many should you have? That's a personal choice.

At the very least, you need a current copy of a "Red Book", which shows some basics and retail prices. I also recommend having a current copy of a "Black Book", which reflects what I call dealer prices.

I also highly recommend having at least one book on detecting fake and counterfeit coins/currency. Some possibilities are "The Official Guide To Detecting Altered & Counterfeit U.S. Coins & Currency" and the chapter on this topic in "The Coin Collector's Survival Manual".

Next, come books on what you collect. If you collect error coins as I do, then the "Cherrypickers' Guide" set is a must. For antique coin enthusiasts of which I dabble, you can get a DVD full of out-of-print books.

I also look for "classic" books that may be out of print. Just search for the title and you'll find them. Two of my personal favorites are "The Design Cud" (1979) and "Coins Through the Ages" (1966).

Finally, I have new books, such as "The Coin Collector's Survival Manual". There are also some excellent DVDs available, as well as online resources. So, keep learning and enjoying our fantastic hobby!
